Adult Learners Conferring Ceremonies

The University has made the decision to postpone the Winter Conferring ceremonies to the summer of 2021 based on public health advice and feedback from students. The Adult Learning Virtual Conferring Ceremony originally scheduled for Saturday 5th December will now not take place. We hope, by the summer of 2021, that we may be able to host a celebratory event on campus for our 2020 graduates instead, reliant on – and in adherence with – the public health guidance at the time.

What does this decision mean for our graduands?

  • Will I still receive my degree? We know that our graduands require proof of graduation for employment purposes or further education opportunities. For this reason, all graduands will shortly receive their degree parchment through the mail. This will be posted to your home address. It is an important document, so make sure to keep it safe.
  • What if I can’t travel to the postponed ceremony in summer 2021? As is the case with all conferring ceremonies, some graduands may find that they are not able to travel to Galway for the event once it has been rescheduled. We will stream the event online so that graduands and their friends and families can watch in on the day.
  • I have already reserved a graduation robe for the virtual conferring. Phelan Conan will keep all robe bookings open on their system until such time as your on-campus celebration takes place. They will also facilitate graduands to use their robe bookings for family photos at this stage and rehire them for your on-campus celebration at no extra cost. Alternatively, you can apply now for a refund. Please contact Phelan Conan directly about your booking at:

We know that this will come as a disappointment to some of our graduands and as a relief to others. Know that we have made this decision based on our students’ preference and welfare. We will be in touch with you in due course with details of our celebratory event, once public health guidelines allow.
