Students with stunning designs win Sew Cool Competition 2017

Students with stunning designs win Sew Cool Competition 2017

Over 250 Junior and Senior Cycle students entered Textile Project work in the 2017 ‘Sew Cool’ Competition organised by St. Angela’s College and sponsored by Hickeys Fabrics. The recent exhibition of shortlisted and winning entries was a wonderful showcase of Home Economics students’ excellent creative textile work.  The prize-giving ceremony took place last month at the Association of Home Economics Teachers of Ireland annual conference in the Athlone Springs Hotel.

First prize in the Textile Project Work category was awarded to Clara Hewson, a student from St. Claire’s Comprehensive College, Manorhamilton Co. Leitrim for an eye-catching, baking themed wall hanging.  It was a creative and gutsy piece that shows that you can push the boundaries of what you can do with clever use of textures and applique. The piece exemplifies that sewing can be fun and creative and it does not necessarily have to be functional. Clara’s Home Economics Teacher, Danielle Conaty also received a schools’ prize of Hickeys Vouchers. Second prize went to Sadbh Galvin, Avondale Community College, Co. Wicklow for her animal themed patchwork quilt.

The overall standard of craftwork received for the 2017 ‘Sew Cool’ competition was of a very high standard and demonstrated very varied craft skills including patchwork, applique, quilting, felting and embroidery. The quality and saleability of the products were considered and weighed up against the skill evidenced during the judging process.

Katleen Amazonas, a 2017 graduate of the BA in Textiles, Fashion and Design with Business Management in St. Angela’s College won 1st prize in the ‘Hickeys Create’ category with her lilac ball gown. It was a beautifully designed and constructed garment. We wish Katleen every success in her own Bridal Wear business in the future.

The Textiles, Fashion and Design Team in St. Angela’s College would like to congratulate all the winners, highly commended and short listed entrants in the competition for the extremely high standard of work. They would also like to thank Home Economics teachers nationwide for encouraging their students to enter the national ‘Sew Cool’ Competition.
