B.Ed. Student Reaches the Final of the RDS National Craft Competition

B.Ed. Student Reaches the Final of the RDS National Craft Competition

Congratulations to Susanna Donohue, B.Ed.3 student who has reached the finals of the RDS National Craft Competition with her B.Ed.2 Quilt entitled ‘Memories’. Her quilt has been short listed for the exhibition and finals of the competition!

As part of her 2nd year B.Ed. in Home Economics Textiles and Design module she was asked to design and construct an innovative interior textile product utilising a craftwork technique of my choice.  It had to address the changing needs of the identified person/client and be suitable for functional and/or decorative use in a specific room of her choice.

Susanna’s description of her work is as follows:

‘The item chosen was suitable for an elderly person suffering from dementia. The quilt design, inspired by my late grandmother who suffered from dementia incorporates a range of family photos which were ink jet printed onto cotton and patchworked with a variety of printed cottons to help her recall loved ones.  A simple machine quilted design gives definition to the piece. The photos in ‘Memories’ were very carefully chosen to signify events and recall family members at particular times in their life.’

The exhibition will take place in the RDS Concert Hall, Merrion Road, Dublin 4. It will be open to the public (free of charge) from Wednesday July 13 to Friday July 15 between10.00am and 5.00pm (until 7pm Thursday). The exhibition will continue as part of the Dublin Horse Show from July 20 – 24, 2016(entry fee applies).

After the exhibition all work will travel directly to National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Co Mayo where it will be exhibited from August 9 to November 13. Prize-winning works only will be exhibited at the National Crafts & Design Fair in the RDS in early December 2016.

The winners will be announced on the 12th of July.

Whether she wins or not it is excellent recognition to have her work exhibited in these arenas! Well done to Susanna and the Textiles and Design staff involved.
