Design and Crafts Council of Ireland curated 'Pattern' Textile Exhibition in St. Angela's College, June 13th to September 12th 2014

Design and Crafts Council of Ireland curated 'Pattern' Textile Exhibition in St. Angela's College, June 13th to September 12th 2014
‘Pattern’, an exhibition of textiles curated by the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland is on display in St. Angela’s College Gallery from June 13th to September 12th as part of a range of exhibitions in Sligo for the Lily Lolly CraftFest. “The participating artists have combined and repeated decorations or motifs to form patterns in their chosen medium. Much of the wide ranging work reflects the patterns commonly found in the natural world – symmetries and fractals, spiral and waves. The featured pieces take the form of literal or abstract interpretation. Whether functional or non-functional, wearable or non-wearable, each is a feast for our visual sense.” Karen Hennessey, Chief Executive, Crafts Council of Ireland. The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Friday 9-1pm & 2-5pm by appointment at 071 9143580 from June 13th to September 12th. Amongst the exhibitors is Alison Hunter, a recent graduate of the Diploma in Creative Textiles at St. Angela’s College whose design work reflects her interest in derelict vernacular buildings and their contents which are left behind and forgotten. During her visits to old houses, she observed broken pieces of tableware and this inspired her to re-imagine the humble plate. The collection ‘Soft re-imaginings comprises of three hand-made felted pieces. Alison uses broken pieces of plates, which are forgotten or damaged and she re-creates them into contemporary textile art works.
The St. Angela’s College Bachelor of Arts in Textiles, Fashion and Design with Business Management students end of year work is featured in an exhibition in Nazareth House from the 13th – 22nd June. The students will present their work on Friday the 20th of June which show a range of textile products and fashion garments which they designed in their first year of the programme. ‘This year’s students’ work is of a very high quality for first year and reflects their hard work and commitment to the programme’ says Emer Maher Dowling, lecturer on the course.   This 3 year BA in Textiles, Fashion and Design with Business Management is the first in the North West region. Although there are other fashion or textile design focused courses in Ireland, this is the first course where students can study fashion, textiles and design along with the much needed business management for this competitive industry. The course in St. Angela’s is dynamic and unique in the fact that it offers all of these things.  See www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie for further information.
St Angela’s has also sponsored a spinning demonstration and a weaving demonstration planned for Nazareth house on Friday the 20th of June 10 -12.00pm and a masterclass in Carrickmacross lace with artist Theresa Kelly form 2-5pm. There are a few places still available on this masterclass; contact Ursula at 071 9135659 to book a place.
