Junior Cycle Review: The Home Economics Department Responds

Junior Cycle Review: The Home Economics Department Responds

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) recently published the list of submissions received for the review of the Junior Cycle Curriculum. St Angela’s College, Sligo as a teacher education college is committed to engaging in the process and provided the following submissions:

Home Economics Department- Junior Cycle Review Submission

In this submission, the Home Economics Department highlights the key role of Home Economics as a discipline:

‘Home Economics integrates the social, physical and the human sciences in the study of problems arising from daily lives in homes, families and communities…In the context of the discussion document, these definitions and viewpoints are important as they serve to highlight the role of Home Economics as part of the school of the future which is described by the NCCA as “responsive learning environments where knowledge is combined with skills; preparing young people for studying and living in increasingly complex environments” (NCCA 2010, 23).
