St. Angela's College Host Local Students for University Taster Day

St. Angela’s College Access Schools Programme and the Sligo Leitrim Home Youth Liaison Service recently invited 6th class students to participate in University Taster Day.

St. Angela’s College Access Schools Programme Co-ordinator describes the event: ‘The University Taster Day in St. Angela’s College enabled students to sample and taste third level life.’ She explains, ‘The programme consisted of a taste of third level subjects at a suitable and enjoyable level. Primary school students are thus enabled from an early age to consider the positives of aiming towards a third level education’ The Department of Nursing & Health Studies, Home Economics Department and Access Schools Programme each held a fun participatory workshop for the 6th class students.

In the Home Economics Department, students participated in either a Textiles Workshop or a Healthy Home Baking Workshop. Students in the Healthy Home Baking Workshop prepared and baked muffins, examining the role of the ingredients in the recipe in the context of the Food Pyramid. In the Textiles Workshop, students produced colourful, braided friendship bracelets and key rings.

In the Department of Nursing & Health Studies, the students experienced the Clinical Skills facility.  This interactive tour included understanding the use of various assistive devices, viewing models of the heart, kidneys and brain. Students also tried some hands-on exercises with a stethoscope, such as listening to their own heart along with working with life-like mannequins, such as feeling a pulse.

As the third workshop of the day, the Access Schools Programme organised a Treasure Trail, which allowed students to explore and discover the campus and discover the different faculties. The students also participated in an interactive lecture entitled ‘Third Level Life,’ where students discussed the positive aspects and experiences of a third level education.

‘Students reported that they enjoyed their visit to campus, finding the experience to be positive and beneficial,’ explains Carol Gallagher, ‘The Access Schools Programme offers students a sample of the third-level life here in St. Angela’s College  and allows them from an early age to consider the possibilities of third level.’
