The successful Candidate will primarily teach at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and post-graduate levels within the Education Department of St. Angela’s College in Education/ Teacher Education.



The broad responsibilities include teaching and assessing on Education Programmes, at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and postgraduate/Master’s levels, specifically: 

  • Teach and assess on the ITE programmes in the areas of: Teaching Pedagogies, both general, and subject specific;
  • Sociology of Education and Curriculum Studies;
  • Teach in the Education Department in one or more of the following areas: Research Methodology, Philosophy of Education, History of Education and Special Education;
  • Assisting with the co-ordination of micro-teaching and School Placement;
  • Tutoring / supervision of students on School Placement, practicum and in microteaching;
  • Teach and assess Access Education components;
  • Teach and assess components of relevant Education Department Postgraduate/Masters programmes including leadership of pathways/modules and supervision of research projects, assignments and dissertations; 
  • Participate fully in the work of the Education Department including attendance at meetings and contribute to research output;
  • Participate fully in the work of relevant committees including the ITE Programme Board, Postgraduate/Masters Programme Board and full involvement in associated team meetings;
  • Contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Education Department and progress its networking with external bodies including third level institutions;
  • Other such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Education/College President.

These responsibilities may change given the emerging priorities, initiatives and work programme within the Education Department/College in an ever-changing environment.


Person Specification

Candidates likely to be called for interview will have most or all of the following: 

  • A relevant honors’ primary degree or its equivalent;
  • Relevant Masters qualification in Education or related disciplines. Doctoral qualification is desirable;
  • Professional teaching qualification at post-primary level, Economics in particular;
  • Relevant teaching experience at post-primary level;
  • A thorough understanding and knowledge of the education sector particularly in relation to trends and developments in ITE, including best classroom practice in teaching, learning and assessment, curriculum development and Teacher Induction and Continuing Professional Development;
  • A thorough knowledge, understanding and competence in research and associated publication.


The successful candidates will most likely also possess some or all of the following: 

  • Relevant teaching experience at Third level;
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and collaboratively as part of an integrated team;
  • Flexible approach to work and an ability to prioritise in order to meet deadlines;
  • Proven experience in delivering on work objectives in a challenging environment;
  • Ability to contribute strongly to one or more of the disciplines of the Education Department;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including presentational, verbal and written skills at professional and academic levels;
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the development of the Education Department and to take a lead role in appropriate initiatives;  
  • Ability to contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Education Department and progress its networking with external bodies, including third level institutions.


Reporting Relationship:

Reporting will be to the Head of the Education Department and /or President



Specified Purpose Contract for Maternity Leave Cover – September 2018-January 2019



Salary for the post will be based on St Angela's College Lecturer salary scale - €46,604 - €82,217 p/a (to be calculated pro rata for 0.5 FTE).



The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
