Lecturer in Education (Special Education), Specified Purpose Contract for Maternity Leave Cover – September-December 2018

Full-Time Academic



The successful candidate will work at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and post-graduate levels within the Education Department of St. Angela’s College and will have specific duties in the area of Special Education (SE).



The broad responsibilities include the following:


  • Teaching in the areas of SE/Education within the Education Department at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate, and post-graduate level, and across relevant College programmes in line with College policy;
  • Contributing to course design, delivery and policy formation including continuous development and updating of courses/programmes in SE/Education within the Education Department;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of relevant programmes and revision and development of programmes on an ongoing basis;
  • Programme administration and preparation of reports; Undertaking research and publication of articles within the area of SE/Education;
  • Making a teaching contribution to the work of the Education Department in one or more of the following: Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, History of Education, Curriculum Studies, Educational Management, Professional Studies and Research Methodology; Supervision, tutoring and assessment of student research and assignments at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Tutoring / supervision of students on School Placement,
  • Microteaching and engaged in the practicum element of SE courses; Attendance and participation in all meetings of Examination Boards, Education Department and other groupings;
  • Consultation with students and the broader learning community;
  • Academic administration, including attendance and participation in meetings of the Education Department, and other groupings;
  • Contribution to the ongoing development of the Education Department as a whole;
  • Other such duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Education and/or College President.

These responsibilities may change given the emerging priorities, initiatives and work programme within the Education Department/College in an ever-changing higher education environment.


Person Specification: 

Candidates likely to be called for interview will have most or all of the following: 

  • Relevant Post-Graduate qualification in SE to a minimum of Masters Level and preferably at Doctoral level;
  • Teaching experience in SE in Special Schools/Special Classes/Mainstream Primary Schools and/or Teaching experience in SE at Post-Primary level;
  • Specialist expertise in SE;
  • Substantial knowledge of Education in general, of Special Education and of current developments in these areas;
  • High level of management, organisational and ICT skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills at professional and academic levels.


The successful candidates will most likely also possess some or all of the following:

  • An ability to contribute to one or more of the Educational disciplines taught by the Education Department;
  • Potential to carry out research and publish in relevant journals;
  • An understanding and knowledge of the Irish education sector particularly in relation to trends relating to SE/Education;
  • An ability to work on own initiative and as part of an integrated team;
  • An ability to lead and contribute to the development of relevant initiatives of the Education Department.


Reporting Relationship:

Reporting will be to the Head of the Education Department and /or President.



Specified Purpose Contract for Maternity Leave Cover – September-December 2018



Salary for the post will be based on St Angela's College Lecturer salary scale - €46,604 - €82,217 p/a.



The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
