The successful Candidate will primarily teach and lead modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level within the Home Economics Department of St. Angela’s College in the area of Biology. She/he will also assess students’ work, evaluate programmes/modules, conduct and publish research and contribute significantly to the Home Economics Department and to the wider College.



The broad responsibilities include the following:

  • Teach and assess Biology modules including, but not limited to, Anatomy; Physiology; Botany; Zoology at undergraduate level.
  • Tutoring /supervision of undergraduate student dissertations;
  • Tutoring / supervision of students on School Placement, practicum and in microteaching as appropriate;
  • In line with College policy, work across relevant College programmes in the Departments of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies and Education;
  • Initiate, lead, manage, organise, monitor, evaluate and develop relevant programmes and modules;
  • Teach and assess components of relevant Postgraduate programmes as appropriate and supervision of research projects, assignments and dissertations; 
  • Evaluate relevant programmes and modules;
  • Maintain an active research profile including initiating and implementing research projects and publications in Biology as appropriate;
  • Participate fully in the work of the Home Economics Department including attendance at meetings and contribute to research output;
  • Participate fully in the work of relevant Programme Board and full involvement in Science Team meetings;
  • Participate fully in community engagement events as organised by the Home Economics Department;
  • Contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Home Economics Department and progress its networking with external bodies including third level institutions;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Home Economics/College President.

These responsibilities may change given the emerging priorities, initiatives and work programme within the Home Economics Department/College in an ever-changing environment.


Person Specification:

Essential requirements:

  • A relevant honours primary degree in Biology/Biological Sciences;
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in Biology/Biological Sciences or in a related discipline, preferably at Doctoral level;
  • Relevant teaching experience in Biology;
  • A thorough understanding and knowledge of Biology specific areas including Anatomy; Physiology; Botany; Zoology; Biochemistry.



The successful candidate will most likely also possess some or all of the following: 

  • Relevant qualification in Science Education and experience teaching Science/Biology at post-primary level;
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and collaboratively as part of an integrated team;
  • A thorough knowledge, understanding and competence in research;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including presentational, verbal and written skills at professional and academic levels;
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the development of the Home Economics Department and to take a lead role in appropriate Biology/Science initiatives;
  • Ability to contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Home Economics Department and progress its networking with external bodies, including third level institutions.



The contract is for maternity leave cover commencing October 2018.



Salary for the post will be based on St Angela's College Lecturer salary scale - €46,604 - €82,217 p/a.



The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
