2-year Fixed Term Contract, Lecturer in Religious Education

The successful Candidate will work at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and post-graduate levels within the Education Department of St. Angela’s College and will have specific duties in the area of Religious Education, Theology and related disciplines.


The broad responsibilities attached to the post of Lecturer in Religious Education will include the following:

  • Teaching and assessment on Religious Education (RE), Theology and associated programmes, Education programmes at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and postgraduate levels together with teacher induction programmes, continuing professional development programmes and incidental courses within the Education Department and across relevant college programmes in line with college policy and flexible delivery models.
  • Initiation, leadership, management, organisation, monitoring, evaluation and development of relevant programmes and modules;
  • Teaching and assessment in the area of Religious Education on the Initial Teacher Education programme for post-primary teachers, H. Dip. in RE, Certificate in RE for primary teachers, Diploma in Life-long Religious Education and on relevant post-graduate programmes;
  • Teaching and assessment on programmes in Theology and related disciplines to include Pastoral Care/Chaplaincy Studies;
  • Make a teaching contribution to the work of the Education Department including, in particular, one or more of the following areas: Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education, History of Education, Curriculum Studies, Educational Management, Special Educational Needs, Professional Preparation and Development and Research Methodology;
  • Responsibility for preparation of students to become teachers of Religious Education at Post-primary level to meet Teaching Council requirements;
  • Tutoring / supervision of students on School Placement, practicum placements and in microteaching;
  • Continuous development and updating of courses / programmes, including digital learning, in Religious Education/Theology, etc within the Education Department;
  • Evaluation of relevant programmes and revision and development of programmes on an ongoing basis;
  • Maintaining an active research profile including initiating and implementing research projects and publication of articles within the area of Religious Education/Theology, etc;
  • Full participation in Education Department meetings;
  • Full participation in the work of relevant committees including the Religious Education/Theology sub-committee and full involvement in Religious Education/Theology Team meetings;
  • Contributing to the collaborative work of the Religious Education/Theology Discipline Team;
  • Other such duties as may be assigned from time to time by Head of Education/College President.

These responsibilities may change given the emerging priorities, initiatives and work programme within the Education Department/College in an ever-changing higher education environment.


Person Specification:

Candidates likely to be called for interview will have most or all of the following:

  • A relevant honours primary degree or its equivalent in Theology/RE/Catechetics
  • Relevant post-graduate qualification in Theology/RE/Catechetics or related disciplines at Masters, or preferably Doctoral level;
  • Relevant teaching experience at Third level;
  • A relevant teaching qualification at post-primary level;

The successful candidate should also possess most or all of the following:

  • Experience of working in the fields of Theology/RE/Catechetics/Theology/ Education or related areas;
  • Particular expertise and experience in lecturing in the subjects of Biblical Studies, Moral Theology, Ethics, World Religions, Spirituality, Foundational and Dogmatic Theology;
  • An understanding and knowledge of the education sector particularly in relation to trends in the following areas: Religious Education, including Teaching Council policy and developments; Theology and Education;
  • A proven ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team;
  • A flexible approach to work and an ability to prioritise;
  • A thorough knowledge, understanding and competence in the area of research and publication;
  • An ability to contribute to one or more of the educational disciplines taught by the Education Department;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including presentational, verbal and written skills at professional and academic levels;
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative and as part of an integrated team;
  • An ability to lead and contribute to the development of relevant initiatives of the Education Department;
  • Ability to contribute effectively to the development of the Education Department and to take a lead role in appropriate initiatives.


Reporting Relationship:

Reporting will be to the Head of the Education Department and /or President.


Fixed Term Contract from September 2018 to August 31st 2020.


Salary for the post will be based on St Angela's College Lecturer salary scale - €46,604 - €82,217 p/a.


The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
