Lecturer in Nursing (Part-Time Academic)
Position Duration: 1-year Fixed Term Contract

1-year Fixed Term Contract, Lecturer in Nursing (implementing the NMBI-approved Assessment of Overseas Educated and Trained Nurses)


Hours of Work:

Part-Time Academic, 50% FTE




Lecturing Duties 

  • Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by the management of the College, day or evenings
  • Carrying out a clinical role overseeing the clinical learning simulated environment and the teaching and assessment process
  • Carrying out assessment and examinations work
  • Monitoring student progress and providing academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities
  • Providing academic input on course development and co-ordination
  • Engaging in research, consultancy and development work, as appropriate, in line with agreed College priorities
  • Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management
  • Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and of the College
  • Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management
  • Engaging in promotion and student recruitment as appropriate
  • Participating in the development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements.


Assessments of Overseas Educated and Trained Nurses  

Duties in relation to the Assessment of Overseas Educated and Trained Nurses will include the following: 

  • Develop objective, structured clinical examinations (OSCES) and accompanying documentation
  • Source MCQ questions and develop a number of versions of Aptitude Test
  • Liaise with academic lead to train assessors and actors
  • Market and develop links with recruiters for Competency Assessment Test
  • Drive the development of dedicated web page
  • Programme documentation
  • Assist in preparation of validation documentation for NMBI
  • Establishing a database of clinical materials required for OSCE examination
  • Sourcing clinical materials.



Essential Criteria:

  • Registered in the General Division of the live register for nurses maintained by NMBI;
  • Clinical experience in a relevant field of nursing;
  • Teaching experience in community and/or in higher education institution settings;
  • Commitment to the academic/professional development of subject/discipline;
  • Commitment to research within healthcare;
  • Experience with clinical lab simulated teaching and assessment;
  • Very strong organisational skills and project management ability;
  • Ability to train and develop a team of clinical assessors;
  • Strong computer literacy including MS Word, Excel, Power-point and ability to input into system development;
  • Excellent networking skills.

 Desirable Criteria:

  • Registered as a Nurse Tutor with NMBI;
  • Dual registration on the live register;
  • Familiarity with university assessment systems;
  • Possession of a Masters degree in Nursing
  • Curriculum development experience;
  • Experience with quality assurance mechanisms;
  • A track record of research publications/conference presentations.



Salary for the post will be based on St Angela's College Lecturer salary scale - €46,604 - €82,217 (100% FTE)



The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Nursing and Health Studies at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo.
