LECTURER IN HOME ECONOMICS

 

2-Year, Specific-Purpose Contract (September 2017 – August 2019)

 

 

The successful candidate will primarily teach and lead modules at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and post-graduate levels within the Home Economics Department St. Angela’s College in the area of Home Economics. She/he will also assess students’ work, evaluate programmes/modules, conduct and publish research and contribute significantly to the Home Economics Department and to the wider College.

 

Responsibilities:

 

The broad responsibilities include the following:

 

  • Teach and assess on Home Economics Department programmes, at pre-undergraduate, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This includes, but is not limited to, BA/PME / B.Ed. Home Economics; B. Applied Science in Food & Business Management; M.Ed. Home Economics and other such programmes as developed by the Department; 
  • Tutoring /supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Tutoring / supervision of students on School Placement;
  • In line with College policy, work across relevant College programmes in the Education Department and Department of Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies;
  • Initiate, lead, manage, organise, monitor, evaluate and develop relevant programmes and modules;
  • Teach and assess components of relevant Home Economics Department Postgraduate programmes as appropriate and supervision of research projects, assignments and dissertations; 
  • Evaluate relevant programmes and revise and develop programmes on an ongoing basis;
  • Maintain an active research profile including initiating and implementing research projects and publication in Home Economics as appropriate;
  • Participate fully in the work of the Home Economics Department including attendance at meetings and contribute to research output;
  • Participate fully in the work of relevant Programme Board Committees and full involvement in associated Team meetings;
  • Participate fully in community engagement events as organised by the Home Economics Department;
  • Contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Home Economics Department and progress its networking with external bodies including third level institutions;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Home Economics/ College President.

These responsibilities may change given the emerging priorities, initiatives and work programme within the Home Economics Department/College in an ever-changing environment.

 

Person Specification:

 

Essential requirements:

 

A relevant honours primary degree in Home Economics; Relevant post-graduate qualification in Home Economics or in a related discipline, preferably at Doctoral level; Relevant teaching experience in Home Economics; A thorough understanding, knowledge and high level of practical skill in Home Economics (particularly in the area of Textiles, Fashion and Design);  Knowledge of contemporary issues in Home Economics.

 

Desirable:

 

The successful candidate will most likely also possess some or all of the following:

 

Proven ability to work on own initiative and collaboratively as part of an integrated team; A thorough knowledge, understanding and competence in research Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including presentational, verbal and written skills at professional and academic levels; Ability to contribute effectively to the development of the Home Economics Department and to take a lead role in appropriate initiatives; Ability to contribute strongly to the collaborative work of the Home Economics Department and progress its networking with external bodies, including third level institutions; Track record at national or international level in Home Economics Association(s)

 

Reporting Relationship:

 

Reporting will be to the Head of the Home Economics Department and /or President

 

Duration:

 

2-Year, Specific Purpose Contract September 2017 – August 2019

 

Salary:

 

The salary will be the Lecturer Scale at the appropriate point in line with current Government Pay Policy.

 

Location:

 

The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
