Accounts Payable Assistant
Position Duration: up to 31st December 2021

St. Angela’s College, Sligo, are recruiting for an experienced Accounts Payable Assistant to cover a career break up to 31st December 2021. 

Primarily the role involves taking responsibility for the Accounts Payable / Creditors function under the instruction of the Finance Manager (FM). 

Duties & Responsibilities

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Posting of invoices, credit notes and payments to Great Plains system;
  • Payments to Suppliers made both electronically and by cheque;
  • Dealing with queries relating to same;
  • Reconciling Creditors on a regular basis;
  • Providing accurate Creditor information to the FM as required;
  • Assisting the FM in maintaining proper purchasing procedures;
  • Completing Creditor, Accruals & Prepayment reconciliations for management accounts;
  • Completion of VAT Returns & Annual Return of Trading Details;
  • Compiling information for reporting to Revenue / Higher Education Authority – including -Quarterly Prompt Payment Report, Annual Sec 891B Reporting of payments made;
  • Administration & Completion of Professional Services Withholding Tax Returns;
  • Ensuring we hold current Tax Clearance certificates for suppliers as required;
  • Ensuring we hold current insurance details for suppliers as necessary;
  • Dealing with any other issues that may arise through the above work that requires attention;
  • Maintenance of Fixed Asset Register for the College;
  • Provide Payroll Cover / Assistance on occasion;
  • Assisting Accounts Receivable area to be able to cover for sick or annual leave, processing credit card payments, issuing tax receipts, contacting students re o/s fees etc;
  • Assisting on Student Registration Day (Collecting Payments for Manuals), Open Days etc.
  • Carrying out Administrative work that will arise;
  • Ensuring all tasks are carried out to the highest standards and showing due care and attention;
  • Providing assistance to the FM on all matters; carrying out any task that the FM feels is appropriate that will assist the Finance Department provide a quality service to the Staff and Students of St. Angela's College, Sligo.
  • The role may expand or change over time as the FM decides, however this will be in close consultation with the employee.


Person Specification


  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience is essential
  • Third level qualification in Accounts;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including excellent Excel skills;
  • Knowledge of “Great Plains” accounting software, or similar package
  • Very strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and on own initiative;
  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritise;
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain information in a clear and understandable way to non-finance professionals


Salary Scale

The salary scale corresponding to the post is the Permanent Whole-time Secretary Scale €26,094 - €39,794.

Please note that new recruits to the Public Sector must start at the first point of the scale; we cannot give any guarantees that prior private service will be able to be recognised.
