Home Economics - Welcome

The Home Economics Department at St. Angela's College, Sligo is the community of staff and students in the various disciplines of Home Economics, Science, Economics and Business Studies. The Department has a proud tradition of providing a world-renowned programme in Home Economics teacher education and in 2003, St. Angela's College was designated as the sole provider for Home Economics teacher education in Ireland.

The Department has continued to expand the range of high quality and innovative programmes in Food Studies, Textiles, Fashion and Design, Food Science and Business Management, Science and Technology, Economics and Consumer Studies and Social Studies. Through continuous review and evaluation, the Department responds proactively and positively to existing and emerging needs of the educational sector, food industry and community both regionally and nationally. Graduates of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes bear testament to the high standard of professionalism aspired to by the Department and are employed in a variety of settings and locations.

At present the Department has sixteen academics, together with technical, administrative and support staff. In addition, staff play their full part in the world-wide community of Home Economists, Scientists and Economists working at the frontiers of knowledge and many enjoy a prominent and international reputation in their own fields. Furthermore, the Department is involved in a number of collaborative partnerships with other third level institutions with respect to programme provision and project development at regional, national and international level.

Vision
We seek to be recognised leaders in higher education that excels in effective teaching, active learning, scholarly research and responsible engagement with the local community as well as the national and global communities of which we are all part. Educating learners to be morally and ethically responsible leaders, who think critically, act wisely and work skilfully with the entreaty to “make a difference”. Our Department are dedicated teachers and scholars, working closely with students in order to give them the opportunity to develop academically, catalyse their own passion for critical reflection, creativity and ingenuity, thus preparing graduates for the professional challenges of the 21st Century.
