BA - Welcome
The BA Department currently delivers two full time NUI Galway undergraduate honours degree programmes, the BA (Economic & Social Studies) and the BA (Environment and Society/Youth and Family Studies). The BA Department was established in 1998 in partnership between St. Angela’s College and NUI Galway with the objective of furthering the provision of third level University education in the Northwest region. Students on the BA programmes take the first two years of the programmes at St. Angela’s College, where they are taught by a team of NUI Galway academic staff, before transferring to the NUI Galway campus in third year to complete their studies. The BA (Environment and Society/Youth and Family Studies) is a new programme which will be offered for the first time in September 2009. This three year full-time degree programme has been developed in response to the demand for programmes focusing on two key areas of concern for modern society, Environment and Society and Youth and Family Studies. Year one of the programme will operate on a shared platform of relevant modules drawn from the disciplines of economics, sociology and politics and information technology before diverging into two specialist pathways in year two. This programme has many advantages. Students get the opportunity to live and study in two locations. They take the first two years of the programme at St. Angela’s College, Sligo and the final year at NUI Galway. In Sligo, students benefits from small class sizes, and in Galway they get the opportunity to participate in the social, cultural and academic life of the university and the city. In terms of career prospects, this programme is suited to a wide range of employment opportunities in areas such as community work, research bodies, youth work, social work, rural development and civil service. This programme also provides access to a wide range of postgraduate programmes. If you are interested in studying pressing issues in modern society and would like to participate in the academic, social and cultural life of St. Angela’s College, Sligo and NUI Galway we would encourage you to consider this programme.
