Programme Overview

This Level 7 Certificate in Specialist Sewing for Medical Implant Technology is an accelerated 8-week programme that provides participants with specialised skills of high precision, technical stitching for medical implant technology components, in particular for structural heart/heart valve technologies (transcatheter aortic valve replacement-TAVR). Practical skills are developed and are underpinned with relevant knowledge and experience to enable graduates of the programme to be employed as specialist stitch operatives in a cleanroom environment in this highly specialised and growing segment of the medical technology sector. This Certificate course was designed and developed with the support of the IDA and Department of Social Protection who have identified specialist sewing for medical technology as a key growth area for employment in Ireland and particularly in the West and North West. The programme will be delivered with the specialist expertise of Lecturers in the Textiles Team in the Home Economics Department, St Angela's College, Sligo.

Career Opportunities

This accelerated Certificate course was designed and developed with the support of the IDA who have identified specialist sewing for medical technology as a key growth area for employment in Ireland and especially in the West and North West. This sector is an area of manufacturing growth throughout Ireland and is supported by the IDA, (with the IDA indicating a major skills shortage in this field and identifying six to eight companies with a desire to expand production in the short term and / or seeking to locate to the North West region). It is envisaged that graduates of the programmes will be market ready and can obtain employment in this highly specialised and growing segment of the medical technology sector. This Certificate is designed to match the exact needs of national and foreign direct investors seeking a ready-made workforce complete with these specific skills who have prioritised the West and North West of Ireland as a desirable location for their operations. St. Angela's College has offered this programme with Springboard support and funding in 2014 and again in 2018.

This programme will equip participants with the required knowledge and skills to perform high precision specialist sewing for application to medical device implant technology and will provide practical experience a medical technology cleanroom environment.
