Entry Requirements:

Applicants will normally:

A. Be a registered nurse on the register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

OR

B. Be registered on the appropriate professional register.

AND

C. Be currently employed in health care either in: clinical practice/management/ research /education. Some modules may only be undertaken while working in a specific related area. This is specified in module descriptions.

AND HAVE GAINED:

A primary degree (min. 2.2) (health sciences related) or evidence of equivalent academic credits. Students who do not have the aforementioned will be required to provide evidence of their ability to study at post-graduate level.

D. Students whose first language is not English will require a degree of fluency in the English language. An overall score of 6.5 in the IELTS Exam (http://www.ielts.org/ for information on IELTS tests) is required.


Duration:

All programme content must be completed in a five year period.

Fees (euro):

€600 to €790 per module. (see individual module details)

Programme Overview

For various political, economic, legal demographic and social factors, the context of health care delivery in Ireland is undergoing a paradigm shift. Health care professions are morally legally and professionally bound to be equipped to respond to such changes. The aim of this programme is to facilitate health care professionals develop and augment their knowledge and skills in a manner conducive to the development of their professional practice.

Professional/Nursing Studies

The programme consists of six modules of which two are core (Evidence Based Practice and Ethical Practice).  Students can select the remaining four modules from a suite of modules which address management; quality; clinical and professional issues.  All modules must be completed within a five year period.  A large proportion of the modules are delivered in a blended learning/elearning format; hence requiring limited college attendance.  Students who have not undertaken a research module at Level 8 (or equivalent) must complete such a module prior to acceptance on to the Master of Health Sciences Programme.  Research Methods (Level 8) module is available as a stand alone module.

Healthcare Quality Studies

The Healthcare Quality Studies pathway consists of six modules of which two are core (Evidence Based Practice and Quality in Healthcare Management).  Students can select the remaining four modules from the following:

  • Risk Management
  • Ethical Practice
  • Information, Measurement and Evaluation
  • Clinical Audit
  • Patient Safety in the Healthcare Setting

All modules must be completed within a five year period. A large proportion of the modules will be delivered in a blended learning/elearning format; hence requiring limited college attendance.  Students who have not undertaken a research module at Level 8 (or quivalent) must complete such a module prior to acceptance onto the Master of Health Sciences Programme.  Research Methods (Level 8) module is available as a standalone module.
